Even with the million-dollar renovations, life in The Hole was hardly any better. Inmate Jim Quillen was one of those who spent the maximum 19 days of his solitary confinement sentence. Quillen knew that the 19 days maximum was mostly a front, as inmates who were not “rehabilitated” were brought out for a quick meal and brush of their teeth, and marched right back into their cells for another 19-day cycle.

The Hole was virtually soundproof, with nothing but the thoughts in the inmates' heads to keep them company, the very same that would ease some to insanity. Quillen's days started out with the same 6:30 bell that roused him from his tense slumber. Inmates in The Hole were fed the same meals as the other inmates, but all their food would be lumped together on the tray.
